Terrestrial, with short, fleshy rhizomes; fronds divided into two parts - sterile and fertile sections; sterile section a leafy blade, fertile section a branched cluster of spherical sporangia.

About 55 species, distributed worldwide, the majority in northern temperate regions. One species in Britain and Ireland.
